I’ve been seeing the discussion around this TikTok video, and I think it’s a perfect example of how online discourse often misses the nuance as people jump on the mob mentality bandwagon.

Yes, what the guy said was thoughtless and self-centered. It completely ignored the reality that women, especially when alone on a hike, have every right to be cautious and are not obligated to engage with strangers. That’s a lesson he needs to learn.

However, the leap from “clueless and entitled” to “predator” is not just an overreach—it's actively harmful. It dilutes the meaning of a very serious word and turns a teachable moment into a digital witch hunt. The goal should be education and growth, not destruction. The collective bullying, piling on with hundreds of thousands of likes, often has more to do with social performance than with actual justice. When the next person comes along to be canceled, people will move on from him.

We can and should hold people accountable for their blind spots without resorting to character annihilation. A person can be wrong without being evil.

Let me say that again. People can be wrong without being evil. So, stop with the mob mentality. Cancel culture doesn’t do anything good, and is actively harmful. It’s just a reason to group bully. Assigning somebody with the label “predator“ over something dumb and asinine normalizes the word against everyday people, and reduces the effectiveness and meaning of the word when dealing with ACTUAL predators.
