The Japanese have a totally different attitude the homosexuality because they don't have a biblical heritage and it was never illegal there. There was far less of a stigma, so gay rights campaigns were never really required in japan on the scale they were in the west. Gay pride stuff is generally seen only in terms of being light-hearted and festive, even comedic. Its quite hard for a lot of westerners to grasp.
