I wouldn't jump into conclusion yet regarding the hand sign. It is still widely known as a sign of OK, and us in Scuba community use this gesture a lot both above and underwater to either ask a question "are you ok?" Or answer it with "I'm good/ok".

I have a suspicion that his girlfriend had a lot to do with his change of view.
