Men's Underwear Choice

I think my handle gives it away. Briefs >> boxers when peers dictated >> trunks (we used to call them 'boxer briefs', as they're similar to briefs but a little longer on the leg, but it seems more often they're now called 'trunks') >> briefs.

UK has a variety, but most guys wear trunks now days, though it does seem briefs are slowly getting back in fashion.

Swimwear, I normally wear trunks style, not speedo or baggy shorts.

I'm a huge fan of this topic, so I'll be pretty detailed. The short version is: I mostly wear Hanes/Fruit of the boxer briefs, sometimes regular boxers. I've noticed my peers do the same.

Here's the longer version...

I'm in the US, in the south. I mostly wear boxer briefs, but sometimes a pair of boxers.

Most of my boxer briefs are Hanes brand. Other brands I wear are Pair of Thieves, Fruit of the Loom, Jockey, Goodfellow (Target brand), Izod, Volcum, Reebok, Adidas, and Polo.

My boxers are either Hanes or Fruit of the Loom.

My peers wear pretty much the same thing, with the majority being boxer briefs. I will pretty much be just talking about people I know on some level, or come into contact with enough that I see their underwear. Meaning them bending over and it being exposed, going to the gym, going on trips and staying in hotels, that kind of stuff.

The boxer brief brands I've noticed my friends and other guys in my age group (I'm 33) wear are pretty much all of the ones I wear in addition to: Nautica, American Eagle, Tommy Hilfiger, Active (Walmart brand), Calvin Klein, Puma, Spyder, George (Walmart brand), Ethika, and PSD.

Most boxers don't have a name on their waistband, my best friend wears mostly Hanes and George boxers for what it's worth.

Is the underwear style driven/influenced by culture, country, ethnicity, society etc? ... Yes, I guess? I'd say I mostly see black guys wearing PSD or Ethika brand, same with Polo. Mostly white guys in something like American Eagle. Hispanic guys in a lot of Puma... Everything else is a mixed bag. It's hard to say what's worn in other countries, and how America differs. I'd guess from media. In my experience, most guys don't care too much about underwear. Or I should say, the guys I'm around.

I think it's mostly influenced by what's sold in stores. As an example entry level designer brand (Nautica, Izod, things like that) and athletic brand (Nike, Puma) underwear is really heavily stocked in places like Ross and TJ Maxx (Discount department stores... I guess?). I think that has brought them up in popularity.

Are there any particular underwear styles considered inappropriate or are laughed upon in your region? Inappropriate? No? Rarely are you seen in public in just you're underwear lol. Maybe like a thong or something. I can't remember the last time I saw someone in a pair of briefs in my age bracket, or even a few years younger. I think we're a little too old to make fun of someone's underwear, but for sure some "tighty whities".

what are dynamics between men & women's underwear styles in your countries, like one has to be necessarily shorter than others? I'm not 100% sure what you're asking. They make "boy shorts" that women wear. Kinda like trunks.

Do most men in your country feel comfortable in wearing small underwears like briefs / bikini briefs or are shy about it? Hard to say because I don't know anyone that wear briefs. I don't even see them in the locker rooms. Maybe like older men (60+) and even then, the ones I see are in boxers.

Keep in mind all of my answers are just based on people I come in contact with or people I know. I'm sure it will differ from different walks of life.

Also, in today's world of liberalism and equality, i find it very strange that men wearing smaller underwears/swimwears are often shamed or ridiculed or considered different or are judged while women wearing small or big underwears/swimwear is considered perfectly normal (and thats how it should be, nobody should be judged by the size of their underwear/swimwear).. also, do most men not like wearing smaller underwears or they don't wear it just because of fear of society that what others may think.. whenever i go to beach and i see men in long boardshorts (and underwear beneath) and women in thongs/ bikinis there, this question always comes to my mind n i couldn't find a satisfactory answer yet..on nude beaches/naturist settings, everyone (men & women) is nude and i get it but i can't get the aforementioned situation on normal beaches and even in general life.. some people say men cover themselves more in North American society because of religious background but then the same logic should apply to women's clothing too which it certainly doesn't so i don't understand it.... maybe my inference is totally wrong and there are other factors, so would love to hear from you on these questions.. :)
Society's opinion on men in trunks (speedos). Men I "Think" don't want people seeing the out line of their dick or see a bulge. In some things men are bashful. This is just my opinion.

thanks for the detailed answers, appreciate it. but i am surprised that you said no one wears briefs in your area, isn't it strange, and i think thats the exact point i am trying to ask, is there any stigma associated with briefs?

You're welcome!

I think people assume briefs, especially white ones, with childhood. When I was little (I was born in 1990), that's what the other little boys and I wore. When I was in the 5th grade, I started wearing boxers. Boxers were "adult" underwear. I started wearing boxer briefs when I finished high school.

Also older men (60+) will be seen in briefs, which I think is another reason why they're not that popular. For me, boxer briefs are the most comfortable. I've tried briefs as an adult, and I was not a fan.

Here in the US, the transition away from tightie-whities and plain white boxers that our dads and granddads wore started happing loooong before there was an internet, reality TV shows or any of that. I believe it was simply the fashion industry coming up with something new and different. Joe Boxer brand started with printed boxer in 1980, and they were a huge hit. The rest is history.

Great points. I must add that the underwear choice of not wearing any and always going commando has always been an option, especially back before underwear was invented. In my Father's family history all of the males have always gone commando and were raised that way. It's traceable back at least four generations (I'm generation four). Maybe farther back but that's as far as we can verify anyway. I can verify all the males on Dad's side go commando.
