It’s a brand new soap. All dialogue is going to be ridiculously expository in order to let us viewers know how everyone is related to one another.

I remember how they did that when Passions started. Only with that show, the bad dialogue never ever improved. Ever.

The "husband" stuff was to let the audience know they're married. Lot's of exposition going on in these early episodes (some of it clunky). But that's typical for soaps just starting up.

As the story progresses, it's becoming quite clear that Martin and Smitty have relationship issues. Today, Smitty (Manning) even told Martin (Claybon) that he's been questioning whether Martin still loves him. And by the time the conversation was over, what appeared like an understanding, soon turned into an order by the congressman that in no uncertain terms would Smitty give up his role as full-time househusband and return to work as a journalist. As one soap website wrote: "These two are very disconnected right now. They’ll have to show us why we should root for them." .. That pretty much sums it up.
