Checking out his socials, I'd bet good money he is a progressive. Check his liked posts on twitter and whatnot. Probably a left leaning independent that doesn't care for the two party system if I had to guess.

People say this because he has a SPQR tattoo stemming from his interest in Classical history, while on a completely unrelated note, white supremacists have attempted to co-opt the SPQR quadrigram as a racist symbol.

Just a bunch of foolishness all around.

Guys... take a breath. I live in Rome, and have a passion for history. Both the eagle and the wolf of ancient Rome are symbols dating to the earliest founding of the Roman Empire, long before any of the hate groups that followed were ever dreamed of.

SPQR in Latin was Senatus Populusque Quiritium Romanus, and quite contrary to labeling a slave, the designation was reserved for citizens of Rome and all they were entitled to. In modern Italian, it translates il Senato e il Popolo Romano dei Quiriti, and English the Senate and Citizens of Rome, Quiriti being in fact citizens of Rome. In fact, when dealing with anything to do with immigration into Italy, your first stop is the "Quirinale".

While slaves may have been labeled as property, slaves were not utilized to build the Colliseum, nor monuments of Rome, which were constructed purely of paid labor. They were largely household and sexual servants, rights of every Roman Citizen, including St. Paul. SPQR always was, and is, the designation for public property and citizens' rights, here in the world's longest and largest continually populated city, and remains the same designation as it originally was in official documents of Rome (of which I have many in my file cabinet that apply to me).

Mussolini wanted to advance the impressive advances of the Roman Empire, true enough, but had nothing to do with SPQR. It is to be found in material here from 400 BC to the present without pause. Fascism was a term originating in Roman history, adopted by Nazis, and had nothing to do with them in its origin. A Fascia is a bundle of sticks bound together to hold an axe head, symbolizing strength in the unity of the people, and is found in tall marble columns in the US Senate as well for that reason.

Of all Mussolini screwed up, he is responsible for Italy's design, style, fashion, film, and advance in industry for automobiles and machinery, paving the way for the Lamborghini (who also makes tractors), Ferrari, and other Italian sports cars to proliferate.

Neo-Nazism has even less to do with this abbreviation. It is really astounding how everything today is lightly tossed around as connections with hate. Enrich yourselves, and dig deeper. If you look at Wikipedia for SPQR, go to it.wikipedia.com... and read it in Italian. Italians have low tolerance for BS history.

Love the way you just handwaved away the entire history of fascism, including the countless atrocities committed by Mussolini and his government. Voting for Fratelli D'Italia this year are we? The history of Rome and the usage of SPQR is mostly correct, but it's totally unrelated to its contemporary usage. Much like Norse mythology and related symbols, it is often coopted by extreme right wing groups as a kind of dog whistle for their fascistic views. This is not to say that everyone who uses it or has some affinity for Roman history is a secret fascist, of course, but it does raise a red flag when viewed out of context.

Your point is valid, but I hardly handwaved away fascist atrocities. You are incorrect, however, about “modern” usage of SPQR… it is still used consistently in its original definition, in every facet of modern Italian society related to public domain, despite the coming and going of Mussolini. Besides his egomaniac atrocities (mostly by going along with Hitler who played to his needy ego) he was also responsible for social reform that brought to life the Italian fashion, auto, machinery, film, design and artisan industries, without which “Italian Style and Design” may not have ever developed. SPQR had nothing whatsoever to do with fascism anymore than Ferrari and Lamborghini. If some ignoramus adopts it as a symbol of hate, it only illustrates their severe misinformation and superficial understanding of international reality. American (I am) concentric and imperlialistic perspectives abolish the real history which brought it about. I can speak to this, as both sides of my family trace to pre-Colonial America in the 1600’s.
