Monkeypox virus is a sexual infection transmitted by any body contact

Monkeypox can also be spread through:

  • touching clothing, bedding or towels used by someone with the monkeypox rash
  • touching monkeypox skin blisters or scabs
  • the coughs or sneezes of a person with the monkeypox rash

Since the smallpox vaccine was most effective for 3-5 years I'm guessing I have little protection left 60 years later. Still have the scar, though.

How you guys dealing with the monkeypox outbreak?
I just had the vaccine the day before yesterday but I am still feel unsure on whether or not resume sexual activity. After two years of covid during which I have had basically very little sex I am really depressed by this new thing now. I enjoy casual, group sex and "sex on premises" scenarios and I cannot stand apps. Probably just want to hear from the wider community how this is impacting you. I feel robbed :(

I've been abstaining until I can get the vaccine. It sucks because like you I enjoy casual encounters. I fear covid also. I've had it before and don't want it again. People are not talking about how Covid is also going up in numbers and a lot of people are not returning to wearing their masks. Kind of scary because this is only the beginning of things to come. There will be many more diseases that will start showing up out of nowhere.

I've got my Smallpox vaccine and I live extremely remote where I rarely interact with humans. I don't see a need to get a Monkeypox specific vaccination right now.

France currently has 30 000 doses of vaccine. Two doses required, so 15 000 people potentially vaccinated within a month and two weeks. (One month between doses, estimate of two weeks after the second dose for full effect.) Currently none of these doses are available in my department.
There are also a bit more than 15 000 people in the country and it isn't an STD, so it would be nice if we could get some more doses.

I haven't been intimate with anyone since before that pandemic started, and that had been the one time since September. I suppose I'll wait some more. I've got hands, they've been doing a decent job for years. (I really miss kissing, though... and cuddling...)
I'm not a fan of casual encounters, but I know too many people who are, and who probably won't change their habits. I ain't optimistic.

Information out there about how many doses of vaccine are needed, efficacy and how long to wait for the vaccine to kick in are a bit confused.
The best, in my opinion, is this piece
How effective is the monkeypox vaccine? | Q and A | HIV i-Base
So, in a nutshell, with the current regime to give just one dose it seems that one has to wait for 4 weeks...

If I’m being honest, I wish gay men would stop having so many sex partners. It makes them vectors for disease and puts the entire community in danger. There’s nothing immoral about being a slut, but it spreads disease much more than monogamy. They say monkeypox isn’t sexually transmitted, that it’s mostly spread via contact, which makes me think that it’s more prevalent in the gay community because of the hook up culture and because gay men are much more likely to be in open relationships. I know slut-shaming is frowned upon in our community, but let’s face it, a lot of gay men are sluts lol Also, I’ve read that STIs in general are on the rise among gay men because so many have stopped wearing condoms since PreP/Truvada became available.

The United States has the most reported cases so far.

Monkeypox in the U.S.

New York, sad to say is leading in numbers, so be careful NY members
It’s because NYC has the most gays. I can see your point of view. From a medical perspective it is risky to have multiple sexual partners and also it put other people slightly at risk, especially when transmission is not only via sexual intercourse like monkeypox. We can talk about other scenarios where society is put at risk by behaviours which are not solely related to the gay community (if at all) but maybe this would be whataboutism? Hopefully vaccine roll out will be quick and uptake high so this outbreak can be stopped.

That’s a wish that is highly unlikely to happen! I personally think that having many sexual partners is fine, it’s a personal choice. I think many people would choose to have more sexual partners if they weren’t constrained by social conformity and or religious indoctrination.

I have many sexual partners because I do sex work. A lot of my clients are looking for an outlet for their sexual energy because they can’t satisfy that desire either in a monogamous relationship or because they’re not in a relationship and they don’t like the dating scene. I think it’s natural for people to want variety in sexual partners which is difficult for them in our society. This is not just restricted to gay men, I think it applies universally.

It’s a fact that people who have many sex partners are at a much greater risk of disease than people who are monogamous. That’s just science and basic math. The WHO and CDC are currently recommending men who have sex with men, particularly those with multiple partners, as well as sex workers to get the monkeypox vaccine. This is because almost all of the transmission is occurring among these populations. 97% of reported cases have been among men who have sex with men. It’s not a coincidence that open relationships are much more prevalent among gay men.
