I think it was a publicity stunt. Running out of ideas and probably thought "Hell let's change this up a bit, and have him come back in a small amount of time so the views can come back stronger.

This isn’t some giant company where people come and go and things are easily swept under the rug. This a group of coworkers who also happen to be friends. Alex is just as guilty as Ned, considering the crap they pulled behind Ariel’s back.
