Where is the toxicity? The dude flat-out said he wasn’t “gay” because he has female friends. He said he doesn’t like hanging out with “gay” dudes much. He held a “queer event” but only wanted women and trans people to attend. He said people shouldn’t identify as “gay” but didn’t come at any other identities. He did several professional photo shoots and interviews with his “boyfriend” who he’d literally been dating for a few weeks and then broke up with a few weeks later. He said bottoming doesn’t make him less masculine, which is a toxic thing to be paranoid about considering that he identified as “non-binary” for years.
I actually kept up with his interviews and the things he’s said on social media, unlike many of you. He definitely said and did a lot of toxic, problematic and narcissistic shit. I personally don’t hold much against him because I get how difficult the terrain of queerness, fluidity, questioning, traumas, mental health, the gender, sexual, romantic, emotion, commitment spectrum can be, especially for public figures. But a lot of y’all who are defending him entirely low-key have some internal resentments going on yourself and choose to ignore all the mess he’s said and done.
He’s one of the reasons I’ve become more okay with celebs being closeted. It’s better to be closeted or very low-key than to constantly lean on queerness for pubic validation and be super messy, toxic and reactionary in interviews and on social media. That ultimately does more harm than good.
He was one of the first semi celebs to publicly talk about gender/sexual fluidity and questioning and contradictions. So, I do give him props for that.
