Scientists hail 10 years of discovery with Rosetta probe
(ESA/Rosetta/NAVCAM – CC BY-SA IGO 3.0)
A decade ago, scientists at the European Space Agency (ESA) had just wrapped up the yearslong process of building a comet-chasing spacecraft named after the Rosetta Stone, the key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. The scientists hoped the Rosetta mission would similarly reveal new clues about how our pocket of the universe assembled itself roughly 4.5 billion years ago.

Solar storms may bring aurora across US and Canada
Solar storms may bring aurora across US and Canada
(Darlene Tanner)
The sun's stormy weather is supercharging auroras on Earth this week, due to a series of intense geomagnetic storms triggered by recent solar flares. On Monday (Aug. 12), the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) detected a severe G4-class geomagnetic storm over Earth at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT) that surely would have amplified northern lights displays across the United States if it had not occurred in the middle of the day.

research project will benefit cancer patients on Earth
ISS research project will benefit cancer patients on Earth
(NASA)
Since 2013, research has been underway on the International Space Station (ISS) National Lab with astronauts conducting experiments in microgravity to ultimately help improve our lives here on Earth. Diseases like cancer remain one of the top causes of death across the United States and, in a recent release, the National Cancer Institute estimated that this year alone will see more than 2 million cancer cases diagnosed with a death toll of more than 600,000 people. With numbers like that, even medical research in space has been focused on cancer-related treatment.

New star has an unexpected chemical composition
New star has an unexpected chemical composition
(Robert Lea)
Astronomers have discovered a new star that is 30 times larger than the sun and could force a major rethink of stellar evolution theories. The star, designated J0524-0336 and located around 30,000 light-years from Earth, has a shockingly high concentration of the element lithium when compared to the sun at its current age or other stars of similarly advanced ages.
