Abandoned Theatre in Norwich State Hospital, Connecticut
The Norwich State Hospital, located in Preston and Norwich, Connecticut was initially opened in 1904 under the name of the Norwich State Hospital for the Insane. When it first opened there were just 95 patients who grew steadily until it reached its peak capacity in 1955 of 3,186 patients. Although the numbers dropped dramatically over time, the hospital remained open until 1996. While its primary purpose was to treat those with mental health problems; it also treated patients with substance abuse problems and those suffering from tuberculosis.
There were many reports that the staff behaved unethically which included prolonged confinements, starvations, and beatings. This led to a worsening reputation for the hospital with an increase in the numbers of suicides reported. Many believe the hospital is still haunted by the ghosts of those who lived and died there."
