The death of a 12-year-old Pomeranian dog named Boo has shown once again that a dogged desire to popularise a cute canine can pay dividends for savvy owners.

Key points:
Boo amassed millions of followers on social media over ten years
His owner said Boo crossed the "rainbow bridge" to meet his sibling in death
His cause of death wasn't specified

Boo — an American pet who has had stints on Good Morning America and has a photobook in his name— amassed millions of followers on Facebook and Instagram over 10 years with his sibling Buddy, who died aged 14 in 2017.

Announcing the news on Boo's official Facebook page, his owner JH Lee said that she's glad he's with his big brother "in heaven".

"With deepest sadness I wanted to share that Boo passed away in his sleep early this morning and has left us to join his best friend, Buddy," Ms Lee said.

"We know that Buddy was the first to greet him on the other side of that rainbow bridge, and this is likely the most excited either of them have been in a long time."

Ms Lee said she first brought home Boo in 2006, and expressed her gratitude for the impact the canine's following had on people's lives.

"Since starting Boo's FB page, I've received so many notes over the years from people sharing stories of how Boo brightened their days and helped bring a little light to their lives during difficult times," she said.

"And that was really the purpose of all this … Boo brought joy to people all over the world."

Tens of thousands of social media comments have followed in the wake of Boo's death, detailing the shadow the dog had upon strangers around the globe.

Facebook 'top fan' Rosetta Savage-Jenkins wrote:

"I am stunned. I loved my Boo and even have a comfort stuffed toy Boo who slept with me and gave me Boo love when my mom died," she wrote.

While there's over 800 images on Instagram alone to remember Boo and Buddy by, fans of the canine duo will continue to share their special memories for days to come.

"I am so sorry to hear this. I have been a long time follower/fan of Boo and Buddy. Every year I look forward to receiving a Boo calendar for Christmas from my husband. I now have kids who love Boo. My son who will be 2 sleeps with his Boo toy and carries his Boo everywhere. Boo will always have a special place in our hearts," wrote Facebook fan Lupe Reyes Crisp.

Look, Watch

Here is the PBS NewsHour science video of the week.

If you’re a beetle, you may want to avoid playing peekaboo with turret spiders. One of these arachnids can live up to 16 years in towers built on the forest floor. The spiders are essentially blind and rely on vibrations to sense approaching prey. Their vision is so poor that even with this spidey sense, they sometimes miss. Learn more from KQED Science.

Thanks so much for the explanation. I had no idea.

Come on, babe, we are just kidding! You are sweet!

It's okay, Ted. I'm honestly not that thin-skinned, but when you constantly take ribbing from the same member over and over it gets to be old. I'm not here for that. I was looking at the photo on my phone and my eye sight isn't what it once was and I didn't know the story behind the dog. On a side note I love when guys call me babe. Tamuning always used to call be me babe. Sort of miss it. :) * Brett

Didn't know that story either (had to look up "Boo" and it seems to be him), and didn't make the connection between that pic and the story as I wrote my reply before reading the story that followed later on. Obviously, the dog isn't a toy but then you use a mobile phone with a tiny screen whereas I'm using a desktop computer with a bigger screen where you can make out details. So I assumed you would know it's not a toy, too. You wouldn't be the first who has problems with my sense of humor.
