On the left side of this picture is the foreign land, while China is on the right hand side of the photo. The right hand side does not need defensive structures. The slits between the parapet on the left side of the wall would be where the archers shoot their arrows at the invaders.

The walkway seen here inclines to the right hand side/towards China so that foreign land is as much deprived of water as possible. A clear land makes it easier to spot attackers approaching.
