This statue is that of the Chinese God of War. His name was Guan Yu, "Guan" being his surname. He lived during the period in China known as the Three Kingdoms (220–280 AD), when China was split into three parts, each part governed by its own Emperor.

He was also known as Guan Gong (Lord Guan) and was deified by Emperor HuiZhong of the Sui Dynasty (circa 7th century) and during the Ming Dynasty (circa 14th century) he was conferred "Emperor Guan" and was thus also known as Guan Di.

People in China revere him because he exemplified righteousness, trustworthiness, loyalty and brotherhood. The police and military often pray to him for protection, and interestingly, so do those in the triads and secret societies. This is understandably so, as the success of these groups rely every much on loyalty and brotherhood.

The Chinese story, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, features him. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a story based on the events that happened during the Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history.

This statue is located in Jingzhou, Hubei, China. Guan Yu was the governor of Jingzhou.

Present day Chinese claim Guan Yu as the God of Wealth as well. He never was, and would be appalled to hear himself being described thus.

I am of the opinion this moniker appeared after the Cultural Revolution and the opening of China. After the Cultural Revolution, the much cultural history had been lost to, and lost on, the man on the street in China. After the opening of China and the people were once more allowed to religious freedom, as was before, may businessmen prayed to Lord Guan for protection.

Why businessmen, you ask? My belief is that businesses will prosper if the business owner, managers and employees all share mutual trust and loyalty. As time passed, people could see that many businessmen who prayed to Lord Guan prospered, and immediately jumped to the conclusion that Lord Guan is the God of Weath.
