Nothing overly special about them that makes them worthy of any sort of "of the day" status. And it's one of my two boringly predictable spots for taking pics. But, if I may, let me add some context to them...and why I took them.

So much of the northern hemisphere has been (and still is) boiling like an inferno this summer. Record after record is falling. But here in England - and across the water in northern Europe - we're having a very cool, wet, sunless summer. And this week has been no exception. But on Thursday afternoon, just as I was crossing the river to go to work, there was a sudden - and very unexpected - break in this summer's relentless cloud sheet. Hence why I had to take pics of the abrupt difference in the sky, the light, the whole atmosphere....

By the way, I'm not moaning about 2023's cool summer. It suits me down to the ground!

Animal Portraits winner: The Bonobo and His Pet by Christian Ziegler

The bonobo is the last great ape species to be identified and is one of our closest living relatives. Here, a wild bonobo who caught a mongoose pup is looking after it like a pet. He later released the animal unharmed. This behaviour has only been recorded once before by Prof Barbara Fruth at this site
