The truth about Australia's fires — arsonists aren't responsible for many

Australia's massive blazes have sparked big headlines about arsonists, but they're responsible for about 1 per cent of the total land burned in NSW — and it's a similar story in other states.

Mixed fortunes for firefighters in NSW and Victoria
A blaze in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, deteriorates overnight as firefighters continue to battle through wind changes in Victoria.

Because thats what human beings do.
And now that we've fucker this planet almost beyond reasoning we're going to destroy us all.

These animals in Australia don't deserve to be treated like this, to have to go through this, and to die like this.
And I'm not prioritizing animals over people but human beings caused climate change and now the animals are suffering because of it.

How much more do you have to see?

We did this to them.
And I hope Australia has a vote of no confidence on Scott Morrison.
He is to 1000% to blame for this and should be held accountable for this.

Australian bushfires ease, promise reprieve to build defences

Bushfire conditions eased in Australia on Saturday after a gruelling night for firefighters, with authorities saying they expect at least a week of milder weather in which to step up defences against the huge blazes still burning.

Cooler temperatures and rainfall had eased conditions after Friday's strong southerly wind change that packed gusts of more than 100 kph, whipping some fires on the east coast up to the emergency warning level.

The much needed respite was an opportunity to consolidate and try and get the upper hand over the fires, said Shane Fitzsimmons, commissioner of the New South Wales (NSW) Rural Fire Service.

"It would appear that we have got at least a week," Fitzsimmons told a media briefing. "It will probably be the best seven days we have had without a rise of very dangerous fire ratings."

New South Wales police said in a statement that areas not affected by the bushfires of the South Coast, a popular holiday destination, are in a position to reopen for business, although national parks remain close until 1 February.

Officials have been urging foreign tourists to continue visiting Australia, which depends on income from tourism as the industry accounts for 3.1 percent of the country's gross domestic product.

South Australian fire officials said the situation on Kangaroo Island has stabilised after more than 200,000 hectares (494,000 acres) had burnt in blazes described as "hell on earth", by the island's mayor, Michael Pengill, on Twitter.

Debunked Australian Bushfire Conspiracy Theories Were Pushed by Alex Jones, Murdoch Media
— By Justin Mikulka (3 min. read) —
As unusually intense and widespread bushfires have ravaged a drought-ridden Australia, bots and trolls have begun pushing climate science denial across the internet in the form of conspiracy theories about the fires. Thanks to climate change, exceptionally hot, dry drought conditions have worsened and lengthened Australia's typical fire season.

Two of the main conspiracies about the fires are based on the false ideas that they are caused by a spate of arson and they have been worsened by the Green Party's supposed efforts to stop controlled burns as a fire management and reduction measure.

Australia, Your Country Is Burning – Dangerous Climate Change Is Here With You Now
— Michael Mann, The Guardian (4 min. read) —

After years studying the climate, my work has brought me to Sydney where I’m studying the linkages between climate change and extreme weather events.

Prior to beginning my sabbatical stay in Sydney, I took the opportunity this holiday season to vacation in Australia with my family. We went to see the Great Barrier Reef — one of the great wonders of this planet — while we still can. Subject to the twin assaults of warming-caused bleaching and ocean acidification, it will be gone in a matter of decades in the absence of a dramatic reduction in global carbon emissions.

A Look Back at Some of DeSmog's Major Investigations of 2019

As 2019 comes to a close, DeSmog is reflecting on another year that featured high-impact investigations and accountability reporting by our team of journalists about the reckless fossil fuel industry. From new revelations regarding dangerous fossil fuel infrastructure, to new documents shedding light on early efforts to undermine climate science and exert industry influence over climate and energy policy, the past year was filled with exceptional investigative work by DeSmog. The following recaps some of the highlights of our public interest reporting over the past year.

2019 in Photos: Impacts from Environmental Rollbacks and the Growing Climate Activism

Here is a selection of photos I shot for DeSmog in 2019, another year when arguably not enough collective action was taken to protect the planet from global warming.

Throughout 2019 the Trump administration continued to roll back environmental standards. Meanwhile, advocacy groups and activists ramped up the battle for clean air and water and a livable climate.

Comment: Thanks to the Climate Crisis, We're Now in the Roaring Twenties
— By Martin Bush, ClimateZone (4 min. read) —
The next decade will be noisy as hell. As more intense wildfires blaze across every continent except Antarctica, the sound of the planet burning will only get louder.

Climate scientists are looking back over the last decade, collating the data, and reviewing the numbers. Every single one of the most important metrics are signaling a worsening situation. It’s common knowledge that emissions of the carbon gases continue to increase and that this is driving up global temperatures, but the intensifying impact of heat waves and wildfires is starting to overwhelm governments’ capacity to keep these disasters under control.

Jungle celebrity show goes ahead as Australia burns
Millions of viewers from Germany watched the season launch of "Dschungelcamp," a reality contest filmed near Brisbane, as bushfires raged in Australia's southeast. This time, contestants can't use fire or candles.

Germany's reality show Dschungelcamp attracted more than six million viewers as blazes merged in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, close to Victoria state.

Light rains fell but brought little let-up as some 136 fires raged, with 59 of them uncontained on Saturday, and being fought by often exhausted emergency crews.

Roughly 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) to the north, on NSW's border with Queensland, close to Brisbane, German private channel RTL's 14th series of Dschungelcamp got underway(Jungle Camp).

Scott Morrison makes a 'historic change', but it's not the change his critics wanted

The Prime Minister wants the nation to know he gets it. Amid this horror bushfire season, there's a need for change.

What we learned from Scott Morrison's Insiders interview

The Prime Minister was asked if he would accept that his Government could have done more to heed the warnings and prepare for this bushfire season.

"We have to prepare for the new normal," Scott Morrison said in his most in-depth interview on the crisis. He spoke of the need for a "historic change".

This is exactly the language his many critics have been looking for.

The only problem is the "new normal" he's talking about isn't in relation to climate change.

The "historic change" being referred to by the Prime Minister relates to when and how Defence resources are deployed in natural disasters.

This is still important stuff. Making it easier to send in troops, ships and helicopters to fight fires and save lives would be a worthy improvement after this disaster.

And given the constitutional complexity around deploying Defence assets on state land, it's the very thing a royal commission may indeed need to work through.

But the "historic change" many were looking for today, including some in Mr Morrison's own party room, was a shift in the Government's climate policies.

There was some movement here, but not the giant leap being demanded.

In his ABC interview, the Prime Minister spoke of his Government's climate policies continuing to "evolve". This was a significant word, but also deliberately vague.

Asked three times, the Prime Minister refused to rule out increasing Australia's target
