I used to have cats, but I lost a couple on the road outside, and I don't really fancy one that's stuck indoors.
It does depend on the rodent though. Cats are good at killing mice, but certain dog breeds are far better at killing rats. I'll never forget the look of joy on my staffie after running out and instantly decapitating a rat. My current bitches are a bit hopeless though, the labrador can only pick up dead animals and the Boston Terrier growled at one mouse, but didn't catch it. Fortunately, peanut butter is mouse crack, and I caught them and released them in a field over a mile away
