Netflix will typically only commission a show and its cast for one season. Once production of the first season is complete or nearly complete and they expect the show will “land” and (more importantly) lead to new subscribers, they’ll option a second season. This particular series follows the books and is basically an anthology focusing on different members of the family with each release. The Duke is barely present in the second book and any inclusion of the character in the second season would add nothing to the plot.I didn't say they weren't expecting it to be a hit. Clearly they were expecting (or hoping) it would be a succesfull show. But Bridgerton became their biggest show ever and it broke several records.
Like, even more people watched it than shows like Stranger Things or The Witcher (the latter of which probably had an even bigger budget than Bridgerton and also starred a pretty famous actor). I don't think they were expecting it to be this big/huge of a hit and probably weren't expecting everyone to fall in love with the Duke. Otherwise they would have made him sign a contract for more than one season.
