NBC did a spot on Ryan's training regimen, and a lot has been written about his hardcore his strength training. Apparently, he thinks it gives him a mental edge/intimidates his competitors, as well as providing greater speed, endurance, and explosiveness in the pool.
Among other things, he begins by flipping a 650 pound tire, he tosses kegs backwards over his head, he runs dragging a 450 pound chain, and more.
