You have to like a post or post a comment to keep getting notifications from thread that gets a tons of comments everyday. At least every few days or so.

Yeah, once a week I check the Forum > Unread Watched Threads to see the ones I haven't been notified of

If you go to any other page than the very last one before you leave the thread (for example you check someone's comment on your comment on a previous page), you will not get a notification of new messages in the thread. Always make sure you're on the last page. At least that's my experience.
