Songs That Make You Cry

There are things that we can have, but can't keep

If they say
Who cares if one more light goes out?
In a sky of a million stars
It flickers, flickers
Who cares when someone's time runs out?
If a moment is all we are
We're quicker, quicker
Who cares if one more light goes out?
Well I do

The reminders pull the floor from your feet
In the kitchen, one more chair than you need oh
And you're angry, and you should be, it's not fair
Just 'cause you can't see it, doesn't mean it, isn't there

There are more chairs than I need at my table. There have been for twenty years. It's why I eat in the den, I think. Why some years I can't bear to put up the Christmas lights. Others I can't bear to take them down. A lot of the lights have flickered out in my life. Some I mourn daily. Some just every once in a while. I heard a laugh the other day that made my heart race. Of course, it wasn't him. It will never be him again. I still remember thinking word of his death was an internet hoax. But his phone went to voicemail, and the box was full. And he is just one more on a long string of lights that no longer glow for me. The world keeps going, but these people I loved and buried are gone. The world doesn't care. I do.

Singing is how I purge my demons. I cannot sing this whole song without crying yet. There is another that I struggle to complete that is similar. I will post it at some point. I need to cheer up a bit first. Right now, I want my mother. I have to wait until that longing is dulled again.

I like that version as well, I knew you had great taste in music

I prefer the Nine Inch Nails cover.

Wait.. NIN version?

Trent Reznor didn't write Hurt?

No way!! I had no idea.

My self image as a music head has been completely destroyed. I've been living a lie. :scream:

I hardcore stan Reznor. I own a Prick CD. And I know all the songs.

Oh, yeah. Deffo the better version. The Downward Spiral is in my top 5 albums if all times.

I really though Reznor wrote the song. Like, no knowledge at all that NINs covered the song.

Who wrote it?

Johnny Cash, I think. Lemme check.

EDIT: Trent Reznor.

Makes sense. The NIN version is way more emotive and evocative. I alwaus thought Cash wrote it, and Trent just GOT it and was able to give it better.

Whew!

My sense of self has been renewed!

On Topic: it's no particular song, but Karen Carpenter's voice always tugged at me.

I picked Superstar mostly cuz the Sonic Youth version got me sweet on the Carpenters.

I thought I loved Karen Carpenter until someone played a solid hour at least on a a jukebox on a Friday night. Um... She doesn't make a lot of Friday night music. Ruined the whole party vibe of the place. There is not enough beer. We took over ASAP and played half an hour of upbeat celebration dance jams. The other person then played Cry Me A River. So we put in two hours of EDM and classic R&B some disco, and some pop. We were prepared to do more, but the Carpenters fan left and everyone else had the common sense to keep adding to the party vibe. Bowling alley and bar on a Friday night, for fucks sake. Ms. Carpenter is for emotional release, not bowling on Friday.

Anywhooo...

This came out around my very first breakup. Brandy is the reason my vibrato is as strong as it is. From imitating her I learned that, and trained my ear to find all the little grace notes that can go over a chord. She is one of the best note-benders of the 90's.

@AlteredEgo - yeah. Nobody with sense or soul bombs a dance floor with The Carpenters. Sheesh. I don't think a person is even meant to listen to The Carpenters around other people.
