It always leaves me dumfounded why a percentage of women cry instantly at midnight on New Years Eve upon hearing this song. I remember my wife and I were with friends at our resort's party once when the MC did a countdown: Five...Four...Three...Two...One...Happy New Year!!!
The room filled with the sound of Guy Lombardo's version of Auld Lang Syne. I turned to see our friend's wife with tears streaming down her face. I then looked over at my wife who was biting her lower-lip as a tear ran out of her right eye. I thought what the hell was going on? While I didn't know if our friends had suffered anything tragic over the past year, no one in either my or my wife's family had died and life was going fairly well for us. So why the water works?

Songs that make me properly cry tend to be folk type songs written about real life events like tragedy and disaster, I used to hear a lot of folk music in a bar me and my husband used to use but it's unfortunately closed now.

First time I heard "If We Were Vampires" by Jason Isbell. Such an amazing Wordsmith.
This is from a concept album by Dream Theater. Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory. It's the second to last piece on the album, so it may not make sense outside of the whole story, but it is still pretty good on its own. The album is about a guy haunted by dreams of a woman he has never met. He seeks out hypnotherapy to figure out who she is and what it all means. Shit gets crazy from there, eventually leading to this song, followed by another with a twist at the very end of the album.
