Lighting level norms in cinematography have always been biased towards lighting lighter skin colours better. So maybe they've set the levels to better light a more diverse cast.

The lighting in the BTS captures is far more flattering — even for other complexions — I find… the primary scenes made Brick Danger & Dante Colle look like milk

OMG tell me about it. It's like they go out of their way to make the worst possible lighting. Why this is greenlighted for release, again and again, is beyond me. I end up editing the videos myself to make them look less washed out.
