I understand all this nuance, and some parts of me do feel bad for the man. In my opinion, as someone who grew up in a religious environment and employing a rather poor metaphor, his background does provide some explanation for his actions, I just don’t consider that to be anything more than a typical villain origin story. It doesn’t serve as justification for his actions, not from the moment he decides to stand on a platform and disseminate harmful religious beliefs as a pastor or whatever he is/was doing. At some point, he must be recognized as an adult capable of causing harm to others and subject to the consequences of his own actions.
