Tom Prior

The Firebird movie shows only one penetration scene, and there they are versatile, which completely contradicts the autobiographical book by Sergey Fetisov, on which the movie was made. Sergey, played by Tom Prior in the movie, was a bottom and almost deified his top Roman (Oleg Zagorodnii) and always said that to belong to Roman is the greatest happiness of all of them.
Roman was caring, gallant, tender and passionate. He was from an orphanage, where, in fact, he was the older brother for many of the boys, which, coupled with his homosexual orientation, made him simply the quintessence of kindness for Sergey.
But now, if you say that someone is a top and someone is a bottom, then you will immediately find a million offended by this state of affairs and it is much safer to indicate that they are versatile.
Do you recommend the book? It sounds really interesting. Makes me wanna read it.

Also, since this is LPSG, I hope you don't mind me asking, how explicit is the book when it comes to sex?

The book is very interesting and very difficult to read, given that these are real memories of a real person.
Sergey Fetisov is a Soviet actor who was born in the city of Orel (Russia). Fetisov wrote this book in 1996, he was 40+ and he described the events of 20 years ago, the USSR collapsed and he believed that it was already possible to talk about such things as sexual orientation in a taboo environment like the army, given the fact that earlier it was possible was to go to jail for 5 years (he was wrong).
As for the sex scenes, there are a lot of them, considering that Roman and Sergey did not spend a couple of weeks together, as in the movie, but 2 years, while Sergey served in the army, where Roman was a fighter pilot.
But I must warn you that the sex scenes are not detailed (he never even uses the word "dick" or "ass"). Fetisov and his character in the book, Sergey, are more on the feminine side of the spectrum (in the movie, Sergey is portrayed as much more masculine than in the original).
So the book is more about feelings than about the physical process of sexual intercourse.

thank you so much for this detailed answer! i will read it for sure now. other than the obviously interesting aspects of history, life and queer love in this story, i always appreciate fem gay characters in books that treat them seriously and with honesty, being a fem-ish gay man myself. thank you so much for answering.

You are welcome.
I’m a little sad about this versatile thing that Prior and Rebane did in the movie, because they talked with Fetisov himself and knew that it was absolutely against the whole order of things... At the time of the movie’s release, Fetisov was already dead, and they knew it and could do whatever they wanted, but I think he would be disappointed. I understand that they wanted to do something original, but it was not the right time or place to do it.
Roman in the book is a very good and handsome guy and treats Sergey very carefully and somehow even chivalrously. Not for nothing Sergey said something like "I have one god to whom I pray and this is Roman".
