You're not wrong, not entirely anyways in that intimacy coordinators are generally only present on productions that are under union contract, and union contracts strictly prohibit unsimulated sex. This is the case with SAG, but admittedly I have no knowledge as to how labor contracts work outside of the states and this was a foreign production.
So porn/adult films are non-union. What if someone wanted to merge the two genres, a feature film with adult content?
It seems if you did porn with acting, you'd make sure they could act, have good sets and writing and all of that. The performers would be unknown or porn stars. You'd end up with hot stories but using experimental actors.
If you did a television show or movie under Sag Aftra, most of the talent would refuse nudity or both unsimulated and simulated sex, make statements of their contracts and rights. You'd end up with boring simulated sex/doubles and standard acting at extremely high prices.
You get something like 9 Songs, which is a British production, so they can probably get around SAG Aftra
@Khegan is correct and added to that, 80% of US filmmakers are not SAG affiliated and union guidelines are not applicable to their productions.
