Regarding men's underwear styles available these days in the west, I want to understand why briefs or other smaller types (like bikini briefs, tangas, etc) have lost ground and we can't even find them in stores, unless you purchase from a underwear website.. I travel around the world and I see briefs common in many countries, so I am very curious to know why people are moving away from briefs here.. is it because men in the west are becoming more and more shy as briefs show more legs than long johns? or is it the because of the fear of being called gay or being called feminine? or something else.. I know in earlier times, many men proudly wore brief style on the beach and women wore bikinis, but now women still wear skimpy bikinis but men moved to board shorts on the beaches, and long boxers or maximum boxer briefs as underwear.. i would like to know from fellow men what is causing that shift.. i am sure there are multiple reasons.. and i would also like to hear from non-western countries men too as I do see many brief style in the stores there...i am asking as many times i have found myself to be the only one wearing briefs, and get weird looks... and if it was like some men wore boxers, some boxer briefs, some briefs, i wouldn't have asked this question but I don't see anyone wearing briefs these days...if you could include your country in your answer, it would helpful.

I never stopped wearing them. I mainly wear bikini briefs and have to buy them online. What countries do you find briefs still common in?

There are other threads on this topic... The "What underwear did you wear in college" thread comes to mind.

Through the 80's, briefs and bikinis were the norm. Then came grunge (Nirvana / Pearl Jam) , and this new thing called the boxer-brief. When I started college, it was briefs all around. When I finished, it was boxers and boardies. It paralleled long shorts (think NBA shorts length).

The masses flocked to the longer, less revealing undergarments. Those who resisted were pigeon holed. They didn't want to cover up.. And that is where we are today.

I live in a cowboy culture and even though I am not a real cowboy, cowboy style is what I am. I have wondered over the years if there is a brand of underwear that is popular among real cowboys and what it is. I have a feeling there is definitely cowboy underwear.

I always imagined it to be traditional boxer shorts or slim fit boxer briefs. Seems more traditional underwear fits true cowboy style. Anyone know?

Here's a favorite cowboy in his underwear pic.

I thought most cowboys went commando + long johns in winter. I do know for a fact that the original jeans etc were designed to be worn next to the skin

I recently went in stores like Nordstrom/Neiman/Saks at the mall and it's like 80%-90% boxer briefs and 10-20% briefs. I saw a men's g-string/thong and no boxers. But because of the stores, these were "high-end" brands and I don't even know if they make boxers.

But yeah, the boxer briefs are really pushed right now it seems as the "modern, masculine" style and have athletic endorsements behind them.

Men's underwear has had swings between almost all briefs (70s/80s) to boxers being dominant (00s) to now being somewhere in between in the US.

Just marketing basically. If they were marketed more here in the US, more guys would wear them. I think the main reason is that some guys think they look like women's underwear, might be effeminate/sexualized to them, and aren't used to them.

For one year when many switch, I tried boxers. No support, plus I'd rip them because my legs are bigger. Tried boxer briefs and the legs just rolled up and didn't get the point of all the fabric down the legs.

So I switched back to briefs. They're form-fitting, fit the contours of your body, hold you in place, your legs are free. To each their own.

Believe me, the fact that manufacturers push a particular cut has nothing to do with ‘support’ (another one of their myths, aggressively marketed), but everything with maximising sales. It’s not my field but a mate who understands ‘fabrics’ explained to me that apparently, those longer-legged models are (even) cheaper to produce, but because they more effectively cut off air circulation and thus trap moisture, cause more friction with the layer on top, thus causing the top layer to wear out faster

[to everyone, not you]
That hole in your crotch? Caused by your underwear.

As I'm not really an underwearer I may not be correct in my thoughts on this.

I grew up 70s 80s in UK , it was briefs and they were getting smaller cuts and skimpier, tangas were common and things were there. Swimwear was much the same.

Then the shift started I'd say early 90s
A Levis advert( of all things) showed guy in just boxers in launderette, trend then went to loose boxers, I tried once, just awful too much fabric.

Then couple of years later tight boxers invaded, I did try them, but I didn't find it great having your leg movements adjust your underwear , every step.

I had long been a 50/50 free baller, and wore tanga and narrow side briefs, as these got harder to find in store full of boxers I gave up on underwear fully,
I did find that high end stores do stock a range from thongs up, pricey for the label not the fabric used, and I have a few for the odd times I want something under.

My only reasoning is are boxers easier to manufacture cheaply, sewing/shaping compared to something that fits?
Plus if any guy goes to buy underwear it's all boxers ,rare any alternative so they become a habit

Definitely time for a change in trends
