03 Forever chemicals: California unveils health goals for contaminated drinking water

It’s California’s first big step toward regulating “forever chemicals,” which are ubiquitous in California and around the globe. The proposed goals—which aim to make the cancer risk negligible—are many times lower than federal guidelines for drinking water.

Hi Graham,

The Olympic Games have begun, and while they’re like no games we’ve seen before, we can still feel the pride, shed a tear, and send virtual applause. ‘Go Team Kiwi!’ Our Olympic athletes aren’t the only ones who need to be in shape. In ‘Should Boomers Age Gracefully?’ we find out what it means to challenge the notion of ‘slowing down’ and, instead, learn why making wise lifestyle choices can make our senior years more enjoyable than ever.

Can a wise lifestyle include the occasional treat? Of course it can! Which is why you must try our Plum Slice recipe. Juicy plums team up with fragrant lemon, rich almond, and divine shortcake for a match made in Heaven.

On the subject of health, make sure you’re informed about a life threatening infection that’s causing more deaths in New Zealand than breast, bowel and prostate cancer combined. Sepsis is scary, and it behoves us all to pay it more attention (which is why you’ll find it under our Editor’s Top Pick).

Also featuring in Editor’s Top Pick is a creative activity to while away the chilly days of winter. ‘Scrapbooking for Beginners’ gives a new twist on this previously pricey hobby by introducing cost-cutting ways to snip, glue and journal your way to fun!

Last but not least, we brooch the sometimes costly subject of insurance. When shopping around for the best package, should you necessarily choose the cover with the lowest premium? Find out the answer in our insider’s peek into the complex world of insurance pricing

For this week’s giveaways, we have two very special books. Film and wildlife join forces in ‘A Life of Extremes,’ the story of New Zealand producer, director and cameraman Max Quinn, and his journeys into some of the world’s most wild spaces. On a ‘same but different’ theme, ‘Getting Closer’ by Paul Sorrell takes a closer look at nature photography (with a focus on birds) and how we can be more attentive to the natural world around us. If you like birds or photography, this is a must enter competition!

And now for our lucky winners of last week’s giveaways.

Elastic Island goes to: Laura Nicholls, Cheryl Brown, CJ McKenzie, Cedric Jones, and Jocelyn Greene

‘Being a Distance Grandparent’ entrants were asked the question ‘What do you find hardest about being a distance grandparent?’ and some of the answers were so heartbreaking, they made us cry! Big hugs to everyone who entered, and especially to our winners Allan Mayo and Kathie Napier.

Pssst! If you’ve entered one of Grownups’ exciting competitions, check your spam folder for results. Terms and conditions mean you have only 3 days to respond to your prize notification email – and we don’t want anyone to miss out.

Take care until next time, from the GrownUps Team.

Become Bee Friendly Farming Certified
Bee Friendly Farming (BFF) is a certification program from Pollinator Partnership working with farmers to help protect, preserve and promote pollinator health. The BFF program has three categories that allow for engagement with all participants in pollinator conservation while addressing their landscape goals: Bee Friendly Farming CERTIFIED, Bee Friendly Farming PARTNER, and Bee Friendly Farming GARDEN.

BEE FRIENDLY FARMING
Fun Fact: Cecropia Moths
Cecropia moths are the largest moths in North America with a wingspan of 5 to 7 inches! They also have one of the coolest looking caterpillar stages. Check out those colorful and protective spines! While many moth species are important pollinators that feed on the nectar of nocturnal plants, adult Cecropia moths actually lack working mouth parts and digestive systems and live only two weeks for the sole purpose of finding a mate!

Even though Cecropia moths aren't pollinators, planting native host trees in your green spaces not only supports this captivating species, but also supports local biodiversity as a whole. By planting trees that support a variety of different insects, including moths, you are also supporting animals that rely on those insects and moths for food, such as birds! A majority of terrestrial birds feed their young with caterpillars that feed on tree foliage, with most of these caterpillars being moth larvae.

Moths are often underappreciated in comparison to other insects, but they are fun to observe because of their amazing diversity, many species are important pollinators of native plants, and they are a crucial food source that other animals depend on for survival. Here's to the moths and all that they do!

ne hundred years of solitude
To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Science News looks back at a century of astronomy. In that time, Earth has been booted out from its place at the centre of the Universe, spacecraft have flown past every one of the Solar System’s planets and and the Milky Way, we now know, is just one of billions of galaxies positively packed with exoplanets.

Astronomers have made the first clear detection of a moon-forming disc around an exoplanet. The ring of gas and dust surrounds the exoplanet PDS 70c, one of two giant, Jupiter-like planets orbiting a star nearly 122 parsecs away. The disc has about the same diameter as the distance from our Sun to the Earth and enough mass to form up to three satellites the size of the Moon.
