What kind of underwear was popular when you were in college/college aged?

89-93 Virginia, USA. Tightey whiteies still reigned supreme. I mainly wore boxers. Only locker room teasing was if you wore something in a bold color like red or pink.
and to think now, Pink is the color of choice by the studs in the locker room. Pink AE's are the most commonly "borrowed" (stolen) item in a locker room

Years in college: 1985-1989

Where: Alberta, Canada

Styles of underwear that were popular: predominantly briefs

What brands of underwear were most popular with your peers then? Calvin Klein white briefs had just come out and were *very* popular. Boxers were very rare

What colors of underwear were most popular with your peers then? White Calvins, coloured/patterned bikini briefs were also popular

What percentage of your peers would you estimate wore each style of underwear? The vast majority wore briefs

Was there much social pressure and/or teasing for wearing a “minority choice” of underwear? Not really

What underwear did you wear then? Loved small bikini briefs and white Calvins (but they were quite expensive, so I only had a few pairs). My favourite clothes for studying at home were a jockstrap and a huge t-shirt

Early to mid 80s
White briefs and a few wearing boxers in the beginning
Then colored briefs became popular from jockey, the life series which had white border trim around the legs and a white waistband. They came in low rise and normal.
Also, that were popular for bikini briefs, mostly jockey elance and poco.
Some other brands were popular from like hang ten as well as Hanes.
It’s interesting that you really didn’t get any pushback on underwear back then you just wore what you liked and hopefully you had the body to match. I think people have more hangups now on underwear than ever.
By the way, this was from a guy who grew up in California and was in a fraternity so you saw often what people wore.

There does seem to be some regional differences with underwear styles. In my earlier post I mentioned that here on the east coast, when I was in college, tighty whities still reigned supreme among college guys, although colored briefs and bikini briefs also where making some headway. Boxer shorts still were rare EXCEPT I had several college friends from California and they all wore boxer shorts. It seems that the boxer shorts rebellion had a head start out west.

More recently, perhaps 10 years ago, a young man that I know went to the U of Tenn. He was a country boy at heart, liked farming, liked hunting and fishing, and I think this influenced his decision to go to U Tenn. He did not wear tighty whities. He quickly made friends with Tennessee country boys who shared his interest in hunting and fishing and within a couple of weeks he went on a weekend fishing trip with the guys. He reported to me that ALL of the guys wore tighty whities, he was the only one not wearing them. So he went out and bought some tighty whities for himself and wore them from that point onward.

Like me, he will wear boxer shorts for lounging around or just casual clothing, but his standard underwear now are tighty whities.

'89-'95; multiple degrees. NYC.

It was a mixed bag, and changed as time marched on. Started out mostly briefs (whities and colors) and bikini briefs (solids and patterns), but slowly transitioned to boxer-briefs (which about '91 was the first time I really saw them) and boxers, as the grunge look came into form. Briefs were a rainbow icluding white; there were all colors. Boxer-briefs were black, white, or grey. Boxers were plaid / 3M patterned. Brands? Don't remember. Probably the "regular" ones (Jockey, Hanes, FTL...).

I wore everything. And eventually my underwear went with the outergarments. I'd wear briefs / bikini briefs when I wore tighter fitting jeans / pants. I'd wear boxers when wearing baggy stuff. Heaver stuff when it's cold; thinner stuff during the summer.

Both coasts (two degrees)
  • What styles of underwear were most popular with your peers then? (I.e. boxers, briefs, boxer-briefs, other)
Mid-2010s was kind of a transition period where clothing was becoming more form-fitting, so honestly it was probably 25-30% briefs, 40%-45% trunks/boxer-briefs, 30% boxers

Idk, a mix
  • What colors of underwear were most popular with your peers then?
Colored

Above, but noticed briefs were more common relative to my urban HS I went to in the late-00s/early-10s.
  • Was there much social pressure and/or teasing for wearing a “minority choice” of underwear?
No, but noticed some would look at briefs or maybe even keep their shirt on if they wore them.

  • What years were you in college or in the 18-22 age range? 1995-99
  • What part of the USA/world did you go to college in/live in at ages 18-22? mid-Atlantic, USA
  • What styles of underwear were most popular with your peers then? boxers, mostly; a few wore briefs; I did not see boxer-briefs until my senior year (98-99)
  • What brands of underwear were most popular with your peers then? mostly generic ones, I think; Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, etc.; my freshman roommate wore Joe Boxers with loud prints
  • What colors of underwear were most popular with your peers then? stripes or plaids, mostly; the brief wearers all wore regular white ones; boxers with sports team logos were also popular at the time
  • What percentage of your peers would you estimate wore each style of underwear? probably 85% boxers/15% briefs, with boxer-briefs replacing briefs later; I never knew any commandos in college, nor did I know anyone who wore anything other than boxers or briefs (or, later boxer-briefs)
  • Was there much social pressure and/or teasing for wearing a “minority choice” of underwear? not that I remember
  • What underwear did you wear then? boxers, and occasionally none (I went full-time commando after graduating)
Not going to bother with the entire questionnaire because it is obviously very much underwear oriented, but looking back at the time when I was 18-22 (ie, 2005 - 2009), me, my best friend, his best friend and the majority of our friends went commando. Never paid any particular attention to what the ones that didn’t go commando wore, because I just felt it was weird, superfluous etc 😆
I do recall that those tight oversized ones that look good on virtually no-one, but are still all the rage, were the first to go (fortunately). And the last guy to ditch them wore a specialty cut that I’ve never seen online and I don’t actually know what they’re called

Years in College: 1995-2000
Location: Mississippi
Styles: Boxers, Boxer Briefs, Briefs
Percentages: 50/30/20

Colors: Boxerd were all over - plaid mostly but some solids and stripes. Boxer briefs mostly basic white, grey and black. Briefs mostly white, some grey and colors but usually not.

Nobody really teased or said anything but you could tell when people felt pressured to change based on what people around them were wearing. I went more to boxers at that point from briefs.

So I am really into guys and their underwear. The age range I am into is mostly 18-24. Unfortunately, I was late to realizing/accepting my gayness, so I didn’t get the opportunity to do anything with guys when I was in college.

So my questions are:
  • What years were you in college or in the 18-22 age range? (Feel free to give a decade if you want to be more private about your age)

Tighty whities BVD briefs if you were or strove to appear straight. non white Jockey or CK briefs if you didn't care what anybody thought. In summer many would freeball or go commando jock dorm State University Northeast USA

I was at university in the 1980s, between the ages of 19 and 22. My roommate and I wore briefs. Not white ones, though. Just various colours. I hated boxers because they I flopped around too much in them and that is a hard-on hazard. Same with long johns for those super cold Canadian winters - I need a jock under them, even at my advanced age.

    • South USA
  • What styles of underwear were most popular with your peers then?

    • Lots of plaids and solids with the boxers, every now and then you would still see novelty designs like cartoon characters (ala Joe Boxer, Looney Tunes) and holiday themed ones. Boxer-briefs seemed to only come in black, grey, blues, and white, haha.
  • What percentage of your peers would you estimate wore each style of underwear?
    • 75% boxers, 25% boxer-briefs
  • Was there much social pressure and/or teasing for wearing a “minority choice” of underwear?
    • Briefs were basically non-existent and called like "whitey tighties" and "nut huggers."
  • What underwear did you wear then?
    • Freshman year of college, I only had boxer-briefs. Senior year, I got the courage to start having briefs in the drawer.
Boxer-briefs showed up more when I started college and lots of guys were switching from boxers. The Fruit of the Loom black/grey pack was EXTREMELY popular, haha. American Apparel boxer briefs were very common too and seen in a lot of music videos and concerts. Compression shorts (Under Armour) were also becoming "normal" underwear but only in certain crowds.

I’m 30 and American eagle is very popular and so is under armor and seen lots of guys in boxers but they don’t provide support boxer briefs are really popular now but white briefs and colored briefs are making a comeback.

Iowa
Boxers and boxer briefs
Calvin Klein and Joe Boxer
I switched from colored print briefs to boxers and boxer briefs. I experimented with tongs, too. I don't know about peer pressure, but one woman I was into notice the change and complimented me on it.

College 1974-1980
Mid-Atlantic states
Briefs by far were the most popular, with "tighty whities" leading the way. Some guys wore colored briefs. Some wore bikini briefs. Except . . . the guys from California wore boxer shorts. Apparently the boxer shorts rebellion had started there earlier.
White was the most popular color for briefs. My roommate of 3 years wore white J.C. Penney briefs.
I wore boxer shorts. I had been wearing them since 7th grade. Except for the California boys mentioned above I did not know anyone else who wore boxer shorts. Sometimes my roommate would find them amusing because I often unintentionally wore boxer shorts that matched my shirts. For instance, blue striped boxer shorts and blue striped shirt. I think it was a subliminal thing.
No social pressure. One gay guy in our "suite" (6 rooms gathered around a shared bathroom) who wore white briefs himself told me that he liked my light blue Jockey boxer shorts.
Again, exactly. Nightie whites reigned supreme in this and previous eras, yet just around the corner was the dreaded Boxer Rebellion.

I was in college 1996 to 2000 and I only saw guys in boxers. This was in rural Mississippi and I’d guess most if not all of the guys I saw bought their underwear at Walmart, JCPenny, Sears, Kmart, Target etc. boxer briefs may have existed then but hadn’t made an appearance in our world.

I arrived at my dorm in with just plain tighty whities as that’s what my mom bought for me. However i only saw boxers and was a little embarrassed so i bought some Hanes or FTL boxers and switched. I still wear boxers to this day.
Isn't it funny how POWERFUL the social pressure in things like underwear could be?
