We had an interesting discussion at work today, so I thought I'd pose it here.

1) We know AI is rapidly evolving and it has spilled over into the sex world, so it seems inevitable that sex dolls/robots equipped with AI to give them the ability to emulate human interactions (both verbal and sexual) are likely on the horizon. Would you have sex with one or is that too weird?

2) If these robots somehow gained sentience, does consent become a conversation? Sexual rights? "Human" rights?

Sigh. When the singularity happens this is why the AI will use us as a power source.

This is going to be like VHS/Beta and DVD/ laser disc. Where porn goes so goes the commercial market.

Honest answer. Sentience means consent is required. And the protections to assure consent is minus any power/resource imbalance.

I hate that exploitation feels like a default setting for humans.

If I were single, had no prospects for sex with a real woman, and something like this was readily available, I would give it a try to see what it is like.

Machinery and programming cannot gain sentience, they only do what they are programmed to do, by humans. There is no such thing as true AI (Artificial Intelligence)! It's just a super fancy search engines and human written algorithms to give you the most likely response based on the data it has. Bad or incomplete date = bad results.

1. No but it's not any weirder than having sex with a sex toy... it'd just be a human-size sex toy which will be thrown away someday like all the other electromechanical junk we consume and don't recycle. Sounds expensive too so why not just hire a sex worker. They need the business and have the skillset.

2. Sentience is biological which is to say biochemical which is why robots & androids will never have it. If we ever create artificial life from the cellular level up (doubtful) it would still be a violation of bioethics to have sex with it same as with interspecies sex.

On a lighter note...

Robot sex reminds me of the scene from Heavy Metal (1981) where the buxom secretary--after receiving a mind-blowing finger bang orgasm from the robot--tells him she doesn't want to date him because she might come home to find him fucking the toaster.

And you thought sex robots were for men only!
