South Africa crush England to lift Rugby World Cup
South Africa put in a powerful performance to clinch a convincing 32-12 victory over England at the Rugby World Cup final in Japan. It's the third time that the Springboks have lifted the trophy.

South Africa's Makazole Mapimpi runs in to score the Springboks' first try

South Africa's wingers Makazole Mapimpi and Cheslin Kolbe — along with the goalkicking of flyhalf Handre Pollard — ensured a Springbok victory over an error-prone England on Saturday.

The sides finished the first half in Yokohama with the scoreline at 12-6 in South Africa's favor.

The Springboks scored four first-half penalties in a brutal half characterized by mistakes from England, who answered with two successful penalty kicks of their own.

The slip-ups continued into the second half with Pollard and England captain Owen Farrell exchanging a series of penalty kicks.

The match only saw its first try in the 66th minute when Makazole Mapimpi became the first Springbok to score a try in a Rugby World Cup final, bringing the score to 25-12.

The South Africans only rubbed salt into the English wounds in the 73rd minute, when Cheslin Kolbe landed a try that was converted by Pollard to stretch the lead to 32-12.

Will South Africa captain Siya Kolisi make rugby history?
It was an emotional Springbok captain Siya Kolisi who appeared before cameras after the match.

"We have so many problems in our country but a team like this, we come from different backgrounds, different races but we came together with one goal and we wanted to achieve it," Kolisi said.

"I really hope we've done that for South Africa," he added. "Just shows that we can pull together if we want to achieve something."

South Africa won on both previous occasions it reached the final, beating New Zealand in 1995 and England in 2007.

England v South Africa: Springboks break English hearts with dominant final display

SPARK SPORT
South Africa outplay England in Yokohama to claim their third Rugby World Cup crown.
Take a bow, Rassie Erasmus. Take a bow, Springboks rugby. A stunning display of power and precision has delivered a third Rugby World Cup title for South Africa in the most emphatic manner at Yokohama's International Stadium on Saturday night.

All the talk in the lead-up to this ninth World Cup final had been of England's fearsome pack and ferocious physicality, and whether the limited South Africans could hope to live with them.

Well, that hadn't accounted for the big-match temperament of the South Africans, who have now won three World Cup finals in three attempts, with the latest a commanding 32-12 victory over an outmatched England side.

DJRTP penalised for Bathurst engine breach
  • VIRGIN AUSTRALIA SUPERCARS CHAMPIONSHIP

Sandown-500-SW0008.jpg

Scott McLaughlin and Alex Premat will start the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 from the rear of the grid, as the result of an engine rule breach at Bathurst.

The Confederation of Australian Motorsport has released the below statement confirming a rear of grid Sandown start, a $30,000 fine and disqualification from the Bathurst qualifying and Shootout sessions.

That strips McLaughlin of his Bathurst ARMOR ALL Pole and lap record, but leaves his win in the Sunday race, which took place after an engine change, unaffected.

The engine used in the preliminary Bathurst sessions was found to have exceeded the maximum permitted valve lift prescribed in the car's Engine Specification Document.

DJRTP has issued a statement apologising to its fans, partners and drivers for the technical breach, which is another chapter to an already controversial Bathurst.

A week after the event, DJR Team Penske was fined $250,000 and docked 300 teams’ championship points for breaking the FIA’s Obligation of Fairness rules during the race.

Regardless, McLaughlin is almost certain to secure the championship today, needing only to finish last, even if Shane van Gisbergen wins, to put the season beyond doubt.

Full statement

CAMS Stewards have released their decision regarding a technical breach committed at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

The following information and penalty was today issued by the Stewards:

Fact:
Engine 009, which was used in Car #17 in Practice Sessions 1 to 7 (at Bathurst), in Qualifying for Race 25 and in the Top 10 Shootout (and then replaced prior to the Warm Up for Race 25), was examined by Supercars Technical personnel and the valve lift in a number of cylinders was found to have exceeded the maximum permitted valve lift prescribed by the ESD for Car #17.

Rule:
Rule C2.1.1.

Decision
Car #17, Scott McLaughlin/Alexandre Premat, is disqualified from Qualifying and the Top Ten Shootout for Race 25;

A Fine of $30,000 is imposed on Racing Team (Aust) Pty Ltd; and

Car #17, Scott McLaughlin/Alexandre Premat, is relegated to rear of Grid for Race 30 (Sunday’s Sandown race) in the 2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

Archer hits Stokes in net session ahead of first test
Fast bowler Jofra Archer sent a scare through the England camp when he hit Ben Stokes during a net session, forcing the star to the dressing room for attention.

Archer hit Stokes on the left hand with an awkward rising delivery as the tourists prepared in Mt Maunganui for the opening test against New Zealand on Thursday.

Rory Burns will be part of a more cautious England top order against the Black Caps (GETTY IMAGES)
England's top order promise to be more cautious
A more measured approach to England's top-order batting is expected to confront New Zealand in their two-test cricket series.

That's the view of BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew, who says the visitors must take a more careful approach when the first test starts at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval on Thursday.

England employed attacking white-ball international Jason Roy as an opener in four tests against Australia in The Ashes series earlier this year without success.

Against the Black Caps, the visitors are set to use a new top three in their batting order

only because they were paying 5-50 for NZ to beat England who were at 1-20
