This is amusing because in English English, fanny is the equivalent of fou fou, or some other childish expression of female genitalia.

Lol there are a lot of dialects here in the US. Where I'm from there are still German and Gaelic words used right along with English. Here one might say something like "get those back hinter"; hinter being German for back as in back there. So the speaker is actually saying "get those back there in the back."

Yes, the word still crops up in English in places like hinterland or when referring to, as you say, "things from the back" like hind legs or meet me behind the bikesheds.

English is so very absorbent :)
