Basketball Shorts

I think it came with the sudden modesty.

Tight shorts? GAY!
Short shorts? GAY!
I can see your balls? GAY!
You can see my balls? GAY!

For other sports like track and swimming (and even baseball and american football where the players sprint distances), the tight outfits are for aerodynamics where every millisecond counts. If it were as important for basketball, I'm sure they would have kept it that way or made it tighter.

Fashion is a possibility - in the 90s all the baggy shorts and "thug" wear was in.

I agree that big baggy shorts just look ridiculous. There is no way they can be comfortable, all that excess fabric hanging around on your legs. Some of you say you have better freedom with the baggier shorts. That is not possible, when it bunches up when you jump, run, any type of movement. I just think it's a matter of what everyone else is wearing at the time. The designers are the ones to blame. ....

Gym shorts in the '60s, '70s, and '80s were shorter - 4" inseams. They fit closer to the body, but did not in any way limit movement. With such short legs, how could they limit movement? I played racquetball for years and gym shorts were perfect. The game requires constant movement all over the court.

When I buy gym shorts that are knee length, I have the tailor across the street shorten them to 6" inseam. They feel much better, and I like the shorter length. To each his own.

Yesterday morning, when I got home from running, I was chilling outside and my neighbor walked up the sidewalk in white basketball shorts and I noticed his shorts was flopping all over the place, his package was swinging heavily from side to side. I was like holy crap! I have not seen a guy's package swing so much in a very long time. I don't know if he was freeballing or what, he has to be like 5"-6" to make it so noticeably flop all over the place.

while we're discussing athletic gear -

baseball players who wear tight pants where you can see the bulge of their protective cup look a lot better than the baggy old school style.
