Bruce Weber's Boys

Where it all began. 1982. Calvin Klein launches a new business venture.

Bruce Weber's iconic shot of Tomás Hintnaus stretched out across a whitewashed Santorini rooftop.

There had never been anything like this before. The rest is history.

Though I bet his predatory, creepy behaviour started long befgore his success as 'fashion photographer'.

I make no moral judgement about Weber. I don't know the facts. I suppose I should try to see one of the documentaries. There is however no doubt that he and Calvin Klein together changed the iconography around the male body, the influence of which we are still seeing today.

He appears to be a flawed genius. I love his work.

I don't want to go off topic too much but none of the claims around Weber surprise me, just as I wasn't surprised by what has came out about various movie execs and the whole Me Too movement.

The casting couch in its broadest sense - exposure/employment in exchange for sexual favours- is as old as showbiz and probably far older. What about Michelangelo and Caravaggio? Do we think they could resist the temptation to caress the bodies of the gorgeous boys who were modelling for them? Should they be cancelled for that?

What does surprise me in the extent of the naivety among young men and women going into these professions if they don't understand there is at least a risk that this might happen.

pfft yes, people are so dumb these days, thinking you can have all this pornography galore without any awkward or predatory behaviour. Obviously not defending what weber and the like did, but you cannot have a hyper sexual culture without the sex drive breaking loose, it is so incredibly naive. Either ppl need to move to saudi and live under islam or stop complaining about creepy behaviour in these sex crazed times

i wonder how many of these guys he sexually harassed
Countless, since early 90s if we were to believe the stuff of course. Which we all are free to believe in it or not. To dismiss something easily about someone because of their status or influence or works is stupidity and push victims further down the hell they live in.

Toots I don’t think that’s how it works

The main issue is abuse of power. These young hot men were just there for a job. It was business and brands like A&F wanted to sell clothes thru sexy imaging. There was no need for sex to take place in this type of business setting where he was hired to be the photographer. In his personal life he can do whatever he wants to pursue sexual relations. But bc he was fat and ugly(lets be honest), he thought I could use my position, power and influence to get young men who would never have sex with him to have sexual relations with him. He should've just paid for escorts than preying on boys in his job. It's also about abuse of power than sex sometimes.

There is a time and place for sex. We shouldn't expect models who are there for a job to be abused. No one should be forced to have sex with fat ugly men just to secure a job in the modeling world.

Good point, it’s the abuse of power and influence over younger idealistic men seeking to advance their careers. I won’t defend Mr. Weber’s actions, however there is an entire culture within the industry. Younger talent are encouraged to use their sexuality to get ahead. This looks like sending risqué photos to stay relevant and top of mind. It includes changing in front of photographers. It includes being “open” willing to be touched or groped to advance their careers.

The models are either willing or coerced into participation.

This is the cover for "Becoming a Man" by Paul Monette. This soft-cover edition was published by Harper Collins in1993, I own the book, however, there is no information about the cover photo. I'm pretty certain it's Weber's work. Any idea who the model is?
