Completely disagree. For one, it's criminalized and it shouldn't be. Why should anyone struggle with addiction and then be burdened and looked down upon for being a 'criminal', and I'm not even getting into the downward spiral that defines our punitive criminal justice system. Our society creates mechanisms that only make it worse for people w/ addictions. It's easy to put it all on the person the addict, and certainly they are the ones who put themselves in this predicament. But when this happens around us, we should admit that we have failed members of our own community.
I mean, the way you talk about it is indicative of how unsupportive our culture truly is. A culture that sees it as a burden to provide support and disregards the connection to other factors - economic, social, psychological, medical and personal history that likely need to be addressed.
