Christopher atkins

not sure anyone was intentionally marketed to us back then- the gay dollar wasn't really discovered until the 90s... mostly- we got things from gay photographers, etc. more than gay friendly companies/ad execs.

They were marketed with a wink and a nod to us. No one could admit to directly marketing to a gay audience, but when a guy was nude as often as Christopher was, that was for the gay men. They knew exactly who his fanbase was.

I think if Chris was a young up and comer today, he'd definitely go the OF route. He obviously had no qualms about showing his body and seemed to like the attention. But, it was the 80s, sigh...

I always thought one or two stars and one or two mags were aimed at us even i they pretended otherwise: check out For Women mag if you can find any old copies (Ian Walker, Spurs keeper spread for example)

Yes this is accurate. It had to be “coded” back in the 80s. But Chris was a special case. He came much closer to an acknowledgment of owing his success to gay men lusting after him than anybody else.
Randall Kleiser, the director of Blue Lagoon, is gay, and by the way he objectified Chris’ body in that movie, it shows.

Greg Gorman, who photographed Chris for Playgirl, is also an out gay man, and again, Chris is very lustfully presented in that layout. You can feel the sexual heat.

Chris also famously acknowledged his gay following in an interview in People magazine that I think came out in 1984, which was pretty bold for the times.

I don’t think any of this was a coincidence. He seemed to be marketed directly to us in a way that felt pretty much unprecedented. That’s a big reason why many of us have remained loyal fans all these years later.

Christopher Atkins was probably my first post-pubescent celebrity crush, I think. (I also had a crush on Mark Hamill/Luke Skywalker, but I was 9 at the time.) I was 12 when The Blue Lagoon came out, but possibly closer to 14 when I got to see it. Seeing him running around naked/near-naked all the time left quite an impression! And then A Night in Heaven, when he's left stranded naked in the end -- that has fueled sexual fantasies for decades.

You actually saw a nice shot of his swinging dick very briefly in the sex scene in A Night in Heaven or was that a body double? I almost don’t want to know lol

Pretty sure it was him. I’ve never heard that he uses a body double, and from his full frontal photo shoots, it sure sounds like he was pretty comfortable with nudity. Also, I thing that was before the SAG union negotiated standardized nudity riders in contracts, so I don’t think actors had as much protection unless it was negotiated upfront (judging from interviews I’ve read with Bruce Davison about his early nude scenes).

it has been a while, but I seem to remember someone, maybe Christopher or the director said that they were naked most of the filming of blue lagoon on the island where they filmed so he got very comfy with it. It might have been in an interview in a dvd extra or maybe the commentary if there was one.
