You think this looks better than Colton?
Get thee to a dentist!

Maybe he didn't get the "board shorts are for straights" memo. :joy: :joy: :joy: j/k
He literally posted this to Insta today alongside a caption that talked about how this was him at his lowest: closeted, abusing drugs, and struggling with lots of mental health challenges. I’m assuming this was also when he’s spoken about being suicidal.

And still, comments like this happen. The people you all are criticizing online are still people. They have insecurities just like you and I. Some of y’all really need to have a heart. Not every criticism you have needs to be shouted into the void.

First, you need to calm down. It was a joke not to be taken seriously. Secondly, I don't follow him on Instagram nor have I been on it so I wouldn't know that he said this, and I fail to see how my comment about board shorts even rises to the level of criticism of which you're implying. This wasn't even criticism. I could see if I said something about his life choices or something, but that didn't happen. You're being overly sensitive and making a mountain out of an ant hill.

I’m pointing out that to YOU it is “making a mountain out of an ant hill,” but to a public figure who sees all the criticism all the time, your ant hill is part of his mountain.

I don’t think you were intending to be cruel. I don’t think most people are intending to be cruel when they make these comments. I’m just saying the anonymity of the internet makes it easier to forget there’s actually a person on the other side of it.

It wasn't really cruel though? It was mostly a joke at the expense of gay/straight stereotypes. I don't really see how it insulted Colton.

It was a harmless joke. And it wasn't even at his expense. There is a difference between poking fun and criticism. You're doing the absolute most.

Thank you.

Moving on.

My point is that this photo was taken during a time when he was still closeted, still trying to appear “straight” because the idea of being anything else was fucking terrifying to him.

The internalized hate you can feel for yourself when you’ve grown up in an extremely conservative environment is excruciatingly painful. Couple that with growing up in athletics and you’re always pressured to measure up to unreasonable standards. Standards that, if you don’t fulfill, make you feel worthless enough to take your own life.

Those feelings don’t go away just because you come out. A comment like yours that was not meant to be inherently critical or painful can still be that to someone with a history of serious trauma surrounding their sexuality and masculinity. Your joke was meant to be harmless. I don’t disagree. But when you contextualize it and think about it being made toward someone who has always had to measure up to some standard…to see that he’s still being perceived as not measuring up to some standard of what gay men are meant to wear or not wear. Idk. It rubbed me the wrong way.

I work every day with people who are in similar positions, and I just think the internet has become a hugely toxic cesspool where people feel empowered to say whatever they want and refuse to take any moments to reflect when someone points out an alternative viewpoint.

Apart from this discussion, I love that Colton Underwood, of all unexpected people, is an icon for extreme outness and gay sex positivity. You rarely if ever even see those who have been out for decades doing Instagram stories just hanging in bed shirtless with another guy (pornstars would be an exception). Hard to picture, say, Andy Cohen doing something like that. Go, Colton!
