25 or so years ago, I was on a my first flight alone flying from NYC to LA to visit my grandparents. I remember I had window seat with some stale smelling fossil in the middle and another guy had the aisle seating. The old man in the middle immediately started bitching about feeling “smothered” and complained to the flight attendant.
I don't remember what the what was, but middle seat was flipping out and aisle seat asked if he and his son (me) would be alright if he had the aisle instead. And the old man said something like I don't know this kid while he was starting to try to shift up.
The guy on the aisle was like hey hold on, then leaned forward and looked over at me and asked if I would be okay with the two swapping seats. I said that was okay. And I went back to watching the luggage people moving around outside.
Eventually, we left the gate and started taxiing. I don't care for take-off or landing and I guess it was showing because the guy next to me leaned in and whispered, “that was really nice of you beimg cool with me switching seats with that man. Take off can make people nervous, yeah?” and I said yeah. He smiled. And I felt better.
We went back to ourselves and at cruising altitude. I was looking out the window, and he asked if I saw anything good out there. He had taken his sunglasses off and he looked super familiar but I couldn't place him and assumed I was just responding to how beautiful he was. I mean I wasn't a Buffy fanatic at the time. I only started watching it regularly afterwards.
We chatted a bit. I asked him if NYC was home for him too and he said he lived in LA but grew up in Philly. He said his name was David. I told him mine and we went back to our thing for a bit. I was reading the newspaper and he was scribbling in what looked like a journal so I mentioned that I kept a journal too.
He was like oh that's cool, and explained that his was more for work, and I asked if he was a reporter or writer. He smiled and said he was trying to be an actor. I said oh, that's cool and asked him how it was going. He smiled and chuckled at me and said it was a lot of work and that he was trying to be good at it and the journal was where he made notes and wrote questions about his character and story to answer.
I still had no idea who he was but I was impressed with how seriously he was taking it. We talked a bit during the flight. He asked a lot of questions about me and what I wanted to be when I finished school. Asked about what subjects I liked and we talked about music. He was really down to earth and funny. I really liked talking with him. He's why I started watching Buffy and I followed him over go Angel and Bones. I haven't really seen Seal Team.
