I suppose all of that slipped right past me on Twitter because I never saw or heard any of it being brought up. But it always speaks volumes to me when people (even ones on our own side) have a history of using slurs like that before they “learned it was bad” or whatever. I mean my friends and I already knew not to say things like that way back in 2011-2015 when I was in high school. The very few non-black people I knew who said that word were saying it in like 2008 when we were PRETEENS and had already dropped it by the time social media even became a huge deal. Really, really crazy to me, makes me kind of disappointed in him to be honest.
Keep in mind the guy is only 20 years old. I grew up as one of the most racist and conservative people I had known. I was with my parents in 2012 making posters with markers at age 13 talking about Obama being born in Kenya and how they needed him to get away from the demokkkrats. I didn’t do it very openly but back then I would still use slurs and judge people of color, look down on Latino people, etc. it was ultimately trumps presidency that radicalized me and I was only 17. By the age of 19 I had grown SOOOOOOO MUCH. This was of course around the year 2019. Things really shifted during the pandemic though as I was fully on the left at that point. Deans about 5 years younger than me and it seems he found the right path just in time. I don’t think he’s fake, I think he’s young. He was a different person and for late teens early 20’s people, things can move fast as our brains finish cooking if you will. 25-27 is when our brains are done developing. Dean’s a good guy, who now fights for the rights of queer people, people of color, women, and any other demographic that has been disenfranchised over the years. I can even understand him trying to downplay that because it was fairly recent and he doesn’t want people to see him that way because that isn’t him anymore. I’m a bit further from it so I own it now, but back in high school? When my views first started changing, if anyone knew back then that I had drawn a poster of a fish tank with US monuments in it and an Obama statue with concrete boots or something heinous like that and the quote “hey Kenyan, we’re in over our heads and so are you.” It was disgusting behavior and I was ashamed of anyone knowing about it. I made that poster 13 years ago now and that little racist prick I was wouldn’t recognize me at all now. Dean made the switch withhin the past couple of years and he radicalized around social issues very quickly and it wasnt until last year that he started picking up speed. Then I don’t think anyone expected him to become one of the biggest left leaning political influencers in the country but Jubilee happened and he just took off like a rocket. Everyone has a past, let’s look at his actions now and make sure we give him the feeling of security to know that we can learn about the bad things he did in his past and still support him in his good fight he is fighting with us now.
