Is this actually new, though?
I think the only thing social media has done is intensified things and especially added instantaneous nude-sharing / exploitation to the mix in a way that wasn't there before.
Some stuff in the show is definitely added for theatrical effect. The webcam storyline is a bit much and while Nate's earlier toxic masculinity storyline (especially when hanging with his boys and discussing girls as objects) was accurate, his descent into psychopathy is an extreme example. If you take those two elements out, the show doesn't seem unusual or fresh, hence why they were added, I think.
I hope we keep getting shows like this that demonstrate how easy it's become to exploit others, and especially how young guys are conditioned into thinking aggression and treating girls like objects is normal. So much of youth culture - specifically hip-hop and related youth social media platforms (like worldstar, for example) - normalise demeaning women in a way that wasn't as accessible to youth of the past.
