Intimacy Coordinators can be trained and certified by classes organized through the Screen Actors Guild. Think of them as choreographers. Only instead of dance they're working with the actors to confirm in advance what movements they'll make in a sex scene. Actors nowadays have strict nudity clauses in their contracts regarding how much of their skin can be shown and for how long. Choreographing a sex scene in advance can save time during the actual filming and ensure that nothing uncomfortable is "improvised" in the moment.
And while it's true that actors can refuse to do sex or nude scenes, they're more likely to be cast if they'll agree to it. Only stars really have the pull to get a lead role with a body double nowadays, and the internet makes it harder to keep this secret than it was in the pre-net days.

Most people don't understand that intimacy co-ordinators don't determine what the nude/sex scenes are, this is determined by the directors/actors. They act from instruction e.g if an actor is supposed to do frontal nudity they tell them how it's going to filmed/what is going to be shown
Most people think they are the morality police while it's quite the opposite. They act from what's in the script/director's vision. For example Normal People was one of the first tv productions to use intimacy co-ordinators and it had a lot of sex/nudity
I am yet to see a director/actor who has worked with an intimacy co-ordinator and complained. They are universally praised.
Agree with the boringness of all these sex scenes.. Like it's all IMPLIED, BLOCKED, COVERED, CAMERA FOCUSING ON NON-GENITALS LIKE THE FACE, THE UPPER BODIES, THE BACK, etc.. No site of crotch-to-crotch contact, no missionary, especially when the two actors are both beautifully-matched and super freakin' hot! It's ridiculous and disappointing AF

True but a) it has to be a union contract film and b) there has to be a budget that pays for intimacy coordinators.
Many of these low-budget gay themed films were done on a shoestring budget and weren't under union contracts.

This is kinda vague but bear with me. Am looking for an old short film. I saw it almost 10 years ago. It takes place during daytime. I don't remember the plot properly but basically it's 2 guys who haven't seen each other in a while. One of them has a girlfriend who's picture is there on the mantle I think. Sounds like it could be something by Noel Alejandro? Depends on how graphic the sex scene is that you were talking about? Noel's films are basically porn-adjacent so you see like erect dicks/real penetration, but are filmed like a short film. Idk I'd try looking through his website - but I could be 100% wrong... good luck!

It took me a minute to find a copy online [free] but this is definitely Doing Elliott by Noel Alejandro. Which is technically porn filmed in a more cinematic way in the short film style. You’ll find a lot of people on here who’ll argue to the point of whether or not it is just straight-up porn. But I watched the intro, and as soon as the one guy invites the other into his apartment, they pan across a picture of a girlfriend before light discussion turns to arguably one of the best sex scenes in all of Alejandro’s work.
