Is it true that Matt Bomer was about to be Superman but lost the role for being openly gay?

I could be wrong in my timing, but I don't think he had publicly come out until after Henry was cast and Man of Steel was in preproduction. Course, that's not to say his sexuality couldn't have been known behind the scenes.

If true, that'd be really shitty...but not surprising.
