Robert Gould Shaw (October 10, 1837 - July 18, 1863) was an American officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. As Colonel, he commanded the all-black 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, which entered the war in 1863. He was killed in the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, near Charleston, South Carolina and his body was buried in a mass grave along with the soldiers he commanded. Intended as an insult by the Southern forces, Shaw's burial was accepted as an honor by his family who had supported the cause of emancipation.

William Harvey Carney (February 29, 1840 - December 8, 1908). Sergeant William Harvey Carney was the first African-American to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Carney rescued the U.S. flag as the flag bearer fell, carrying the flag to the enemy ramparts and back, and saying "Boys, the old flag never touched the ground!" While other African-Americans had since been granted the award, Carney’s is the earliest action for which the Medal of Honor was awarded to an African-American.

Apologies if this has been posted here, but Ned Kelly was an Australian Bushranger (outlaw, bandit) who was shot and killed. He was/is hugely famous here and you may know him for forging iron armour to protect himself from gunfire. Well, he was a hipster well before his time! He looks like a barista at a hip paddock to plate cafe/restaurant in Surry Hills...
