Bred Davis (seated) and Billy Hayes. Hayes wrote a book on his experiences, Midnight Express which was later adapted into the 1978 film of the same name starring Brad Davis as Hayes. The film was directed by Alan Parker, with a screenplay by Oliver Stone.

Brad Davis, John Hurt and Randy Quaid. Brad Davis around this time stared in Sybil and Chariots of Fire. John Hurt around this same time appeared in the first Alien movie and much later in Harry Potter movies. Randy Quaid starred the the National Lampoon Vacations movies and much later in Brokeback Mountain. Brad Davis died from AIDS on September 8th, 1991.

Anyone know for what purpose and by whom these "grid photos" were made?
The ones of guys in jockstraps were done by the US Navy as part of a posture study. There are also nudes that were done by most ivy league schools of all male freshmen.

Potentially perv/kink posing as science/anatomy. But information gathered in this systematic way can be useful in determining changes in populations over time, and relating to diet and excercise and posture and occupation.
