I really don't. Willing to bet 90-95% of people coming to this thread know exactly what 'birthday bash' means. It is a very common expression in both the US and UK and probably very understandable worldwide. You're the only person I've ever met who doesn't.

the internet lends a lot of anonymity. A lot of the mean comments come from people who are angry they couldn't be out an open at his age, teenagers in conservative families scared to come out, so they lash out at gay people on the internet. A lot of the "mean" comments about him are nonsensical and outright wrong. Like calling him ugly, we know that's factually incorrect, but some people don't have anything better to do.
