Except they had a one season deal. When the first season was a huge success, they signed for season 2 and 3. There is no reason they wouldn't do the same with 4 and 5 if the ratings stay high.
There are plenty of reason's why they wouldn't.
And they announced Season 2 and 3 when Season 1 dropped, so they'd signed those without knowing what success it would have.
But as outlined, there won't be a season 5, as the material would only allow for 4 season's and Alice Oseman doesn't want to write any more.
And season 4 totally depends on the cast and their agents. They're not contractually obliged to a fourth season, and they have a higher profile and bigger offers on the table.
IF there is a fourth season it'll be like Sex Education, where it comes out later, and gets rushed around everyone's schedules.
Season 2 didn't perform as well as the first and was really hindered by all the cast staying off social media due to the strikes.
The first thrived off social media engagement untill the majority of the fanbase harassed half the cast off it.
It'll be a victim of it's own success.
