Seems like he was probably told to give some kind of statement but at the same time didn't want to give a definitive answer to keep the door open for a specific answer later if needed.
Having been there myself years ago, I think he's still coming to grips with things himself and this seemed a lot more clear in his head than it does to us.
It’s possible that his attraction to multiple genders is not something he planned to acknowledge beyond jokes at this stage in life. But the viral news story forced him to come out, to avoid career suicide. And since he hasn’t had time to commit to a label yet, we get this vague admission of non-straightness. I’m proud of him regardless.

As someone who saw his comment yesterday with confused eyes thinking there was a joke-like tone, I regret that stance. It's pretty clear he's on the spectrum of LGBTQ+ with this new statement. There really isn't anything else to be confused about.
