Leo Woodall

So (spoiler alert!), do we think the character of Jack is meant to be gay? (Not asking about Leo here.)

The non-subtitled words of the captain are something like "I'm also gay. Everyone [here] is gay." Wondering if people think that applies to Jack too. Like a lot of great fiction, I think there's intentional ambiguity but am curious at others' takes.

Not gay. From he speech he definitely seemed to do the sex with his ‘uncle’ only for money, not enjoyment. However he (initially) did really look like he was enjoying his time with Portia - she was a job but he obviously didn’t mind.

Could be that he’s bi, but the show gave us no reason to think of him as gay.

I totally would have agreed until that Italian captain's comment. That it was untranslated means it's ultimately not important for us to know, and I realize that scene was more about Tanya's impossible immediate situation. Just made me think of it as an interesting twist/possibility. We all know that many gay men can fake passion with women.

The way Jack acts is definitely to me straight fuckboy from essex. I definitely think he is straight and given the speech where he said he was in real deep he was probably willing to do anything to try and get his life back on track. But also, he says that the old gay dude has no money sooooo that confuses me. I've not seen the finale yet so i'll be back after i see that if we find out anymore lol

The scene I'm quoting is from the finale. I'd be right there with you if I hadn't seen that -- and even with that, I know it's a stretch. Just something I wondered about.
We’re all thirsty for Jack… but he wasn’t on the boat though. I think that’s just wishful thinking. Why would the captain include someone that isn’t even there in his statement that everyone there is gay?

The simple truth is that every interaction with his uncle is strained, whereas he’s actually having fun with Portia. In their first sex scene he was clearly fucking her like a straight guy would. Besides the show not giving us any reason to assume he’s not a straight (albeit willing to be a gay4pay escort), he also acts completely straight. There’s not really any mannerisms or things he says that seem gay.

I’m sorry buddy, I’m also really into Jack and I would love to have a boyfriend like that, but sadly for us guys like that just aren’t gay. There’s something about that specific personality that only happens in combination with being straight.

Good points.

For the record, I definitely don't want a boyfriend like Jack! Leo, sure. Not Jack.

Totally agree with this. Something about the Essex accent and his personality is just such a massive turn on. Turns out Portia felt the same xD
Wow didn’t know I’d have the unpopular opinion. I hear ya. What is it about the Essex accent? A working class boy who’s rough trade?
