It looks like a spray pump, which they may have had soap or spray (anti-lice?) for the new recruits.
The caption on the first photo says the new recruits get sprayed for skin diseases (ringworm etc?)

Yes, finding that first item was useful for tying everything together. One guy appears in the barbers queue and also in the nude 'at attention' close up (it looks like the same guy to me anyway). Previosuly I'd not realised all the pics were part of the same procedure.

It's an interesting look back and I wonder how the guys felt about the magazine photographer being there (not that they would have had a choice I suspect, and had more to worry about).

I don't know why the last three are so small, they're as large as the first group. I'll try again if anyone wants to see them better. Of course they are the best ones from the series from George Silk, LIFE.
