Maybe he pays his rent. I recall awhile ago Michael was found out by his landlord of doing "tattoo work" in his apartment. Apparently, the landlord didn't like that. So maybe he gotten evicted or something and needed someone to pay for his new place or moved into that guys place which means they're doing a "trade".
